Why in South Africa

For over three hundred years South Africa suffered colonial oppression. On the 27 April 1994 a miracle occurred. A new government elected by the people was ushered in. But there was a history behind this miracle, which we need to remember. A history which linked us to the struggles of the oppressed people of the world including the history of India against British colonialism. This close link was created by Mahatma Gandhi, who spent 21 years in South Africa and left the legacy of militant but nonviolent action with us.

The Salt march creates an opportunity for us to make that link and to remember the legacy left by Chief Luthuli and other leaders who advocated for a mass democratic struggle in our country. We remember their disciplined and nonviolent actions and commit ourselves to nonviolence and ubuntu as a mark of respect for these leaders of our country.
